How to Choose the Right Unit
How to Calculate the Correct BTU
EXAMPLE: Mini-Split in a Kitchen
You have a 20' by 15' kitchen, that has 2 large windows facing the sun in the morning and the evening. Your ceiling is 10' high and the room usually has 2 people in it.
To estimate the BTU required to cool the space, the math would break down like this:
- Baseline square foot coverage:
20 x 15 = 300 sq. ft. = 9,000 BTU
- For kitchens, add in 2,000 BTU:
9,000 BTU + 2,000 BTU = 11,000 BTU
- For rooms with a lot of windows, increase BTU by 10%:
11,000 BTU x .10 = 1,100 + 11,000 = 12,10
- For ceilings higher than the standard 8 ft. height, increase BTU by 20%:
12,100 BTU x .20 = 2,420 BTU + 12,100 BTU = 14,520 BTU
- Add in 1,200 BTU to account for room occupants:
14,520 BTU + 1,200 BTU = 15,720 BTU
With all factors accounted for, to effectively cool your kitchen, you would need a: 18,000 BTU mini-split
